Lewa was once a cattle ranch; it then became a heavily guarded black rhino sanctuary, and it is now the headquarters for a non-profit wildlife conservancy, which has gained a world-wide reputation for extending the benefits of conservation beyond its borders. Lewa’s mission is:
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for wildlife conservation. It does this through the protection and management of species and their habitat; the support of community conservation initiatives and the education of neighbouring communities in the value of wildlife.
Anna Merz ranks as one of the world's foremost champions of the black rhino. This is not only in her public profile but also in her hands-on approach which has contributed enormously to the survival of Kenya's black rhino. In 1982 she persuaded the Craig family, who own Lewa, to set aside some 5,000 acres as a rhino sanctuary. This they named the Ngare Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary.
